Some sad news before today’s game

Manchester United confirmed yesterday that Cathy Ferguson, the wife of legendary manager Sir Alex, passed away on Thursday aged 84.

A statement on behalf of the family read: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

The flags at Old Trafford are at half mast and the players will wear black armbands for today’s game.

Manchester United 1-0 Brentford

Brentford arrived at Old Trafford in April with the hosts winless in three matches, one of those being the 7-0 thrashing at Anfield, but they were able to get back on track in their pursuit of a top-four place.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game in the 27th minute, a result that started a run of four victories in five games for Ten Hag’s side.

Unfortunately for Brentford, it started a run of three defeats.

Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

Brentford went into the start of last season facing ‘second-season syndrome’ fears, but they were able to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

A 2-2 draw with Leicester on the opening day was followed up by a 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It consigned their visitors to a horrendous start to the Ten Hag era after they were beaten at home by Brighton in the first game of the season.

All four goals — courtesy of Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo — were scored in a first half described as one of the worst in United’s history.

Fortunately, they exacted their revenge later in the season.

Ten Hag: Managing Man United isn’t an impossible job

While it might feel like it at times, Ten Hag would not be drawn into looking for sympathy when asked if managing Manchester United is an impossible job.

“It’s the wrong way (to look at it),” he responded. “We have to fight. I think there is no club where it never goes down.

“We are in a bad place but then you have to fight. You have to realise, everyone, that we are there and you have to fight together and you are on one page on every occasion.”
